We offer a wide range of mandatory and specialized instruction—from general laboratory, biological, and chemical safety to radiation management, hazardous materials shipping, and life safety protocols. With both initial certifications and regular refresher courses tailored for everyone from principal investigators to facilities and public safety staff, our programs are designed to maintain the highest standards of safety, compliance, and well-being across our entire community.

Through the American Heart Association, our partners in GERMS offer a variety of courses where one may obtain certification and learn proper skills involving CPR, AED usage, and First Aid. Learning the skills and techniques needed to properly perform CPR and use an AED is important, as it can increase the patient’s chance of survival and be the difference between life and death. Over 375,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year, and as such, effective resuscitation of a patient prior to the arrival of an ambulance can significantly improve the individual’s chance of survival in an emergency. Therefore, it is highly useful to be able to successfully perform CPR in the event of an emergency.

This annual training is required for all Georgetown University staff, faculty, and student leaders identified as Campus Security Authorities (CSAs). Under the federal Clery Act, CSAs have a critical responsibility to report certain crimes and incidents to ensure the safety of our campus community and the provision of support services to those in need. By completing this training, you help Georgetown maintain an interconnected network of safety and support, ensuring all members of our community can thrive.
