Georgetown University Summer Sessions Campus Safety Resources

General Campus Safety

  • Please visit publicsafety.georgetown.edu for a comprehensive overview of our safety resources.
  • The safety of our community is our top priority. The Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) works 24/7, 365 days a year to protect our DC campuses from crime and numerous threats, and responds to thousands of calls each year to support students, faculty and staff who are in need. In the case of an emergency, the department has a number of robust emergency response procedures to keep the community safe.
    • GUPD can be reached 24/7 on the Hilltop Campus at (202) 687-4343 and at (202) 662-9325 on the Capitol Campus. If off-campus, call 911.
  • Georgetown University takes a team approach to keeping our campus safe. This includes GUPD, the Office of Threat Assessment, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM), and others across the university who work together daily to protect our community. The University also coordinate closely with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement agencies.
    • These professionals, and more, continue to monitor current events and assess any potential impacts to Georgetown’s Washington, DC campuses. At this time, there have been no disruptions to campus operations.
  • When there is a specific safety concern anywhere on the Hilltop or Capitol campuses, our police officers and other professionals take appropriate measures, some of which may include increased patrols, signage and public awareness campaigns, community messages and safety reminders, additional training for relevant safety staff, and working with campus partners to initiate any other physical changes needed to ensure the safety of the university community.
  • GUPD is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), the gold standard for credentialing authority through the joint efforts of law enforcement’s major executive associations. The CALEA Accreditation program seals are reserved for use by those public safety agencies that have demonstrated compliance with CALEA Standards and have been awarded CALEA Accreditation by the Commission.

Safety Resources for SCS Summer Session Students

  • Georgetown summer students can share information about concerning incidents with GUPD via the LiveSafe app. LiveSafe is a personal security system that connects users with GUPD when activated during an emergency situation. The app also allows users to report suspicious activity, request a SafeRide on the Hilltop Campus or personal escort on the Hilltop or Capitol campuses, and use SafeWalk to share their location. Students can create an account on LiveSafe using their Georgetown NetID.
  • All summer session students and leaders who have a NetID are automatically enrolled to receive email and text messages from HOYAlert, Georgetown’s mass notification system used in the event of an emergency situation or incident on campus. Anyone, including parents, can also “follow” HOYAlert on X (formerly Twitter).
  • Those visiting or studying at Georgetown may also consider enrolling in Alert DC. AlertDC is the official District of Columbia communications system that allows you to receive emergency alerts, notifications, and updates directly from DC’s public safety officials.
