Lauinger laptop theft ring was apprehended by DPS

March 15, 2011.  In a joint operation between DPS detectives and patrol officers, three alleged members of a laptop theft ring were apprehended at Lauinger Library. DPS had been conducting an ongoing police operation involving plain clothes surveillance and uniform patrol. Security Officer Patrica Watkins had recognized the suspects from police alerts and notified DPS. A student on the scene witnessed the suspects rummaging through backpacks and notified DPS as well. Officers involved in the capture were Investigative Sgt. David Ruiz, Officers Jacob Miller and Brian Murray. As a result of the operation, two adult males and one adult female were detained. One was charged with unlawful entry. All three were barred from the campus.


Bicycle thief apprehended by DPS Bike Patrol

March 4, 2011.   Sgt. Kandy Woehler was on bike patrol when a call was received for a bike theft in progress. A student had called DPS to report an adult male cutting a bike lock at Red Square. Sgt. Woehler spotted a subject matching the complainant's description of the suspect and apprehended him. Officer Minor assisted in the arrest. The suspect was charged with being in possession of stolen property and barred from campus.
