Careers
A Georgetown University Campus Police Officer is responsible for the detection and prevention of criminal and non-criminal incidents, as well as the enforcement of local ordinances arising from the District of Columbia Code, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in one of the most prestigious and diverse educational institutions in the greater Washington Metropolitan area.
Campus Police Officers receive their official powers of enforcement from the D.C. Code, Sect.4-114 and the Georgetown University Administrative Code of Conduct. The codes authorize a special police officer to utilize the powers of arrest for offenses committed within the premises to which their jurisdiction extends.
Campus Police applicants must be 21 years or older, United States citizens, and in generally good health. While police or security experience is certainly desirable, those applicants possessing the ability to deliver essential public safety services to a diverse and growing environment of students, faculty, staff, and visitors are most certainly acceptable.
In addition to orientation and training on campus, police officers receive eight weeks of intense training at the Consortium of Law Enforcement Training Academy during their first year of service. Academy instructors teach a curriculum covering topics including the laws of arrest, search and seizure, crisis intervention, self defense tactics, and cultural diversity. Upon successful completion of this training, officers receive official police academy certification and are mandated to provide the highest level of professionalism in the enforcement of their duties.
