Accreditation

The Georgetown University Department of Public Safety (DPS) has the distinction of being the first accredited law enforcement agency in Washington, D.C., originally received in March 1994 and successfully maintained ever since. CALEA conducted its most recent assessment of DPS in August 2006, when it examined all aspects of DPS policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services.

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) was created in 1979 through the joint efforts of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the National Sheriff's Association, and the Police Executive Research Forum. CALEA was formed to develop a set of law enforcement standards and to establish an accreditation process that would demonstrate that accredited police departments meet professionally recognized criteria in law enforcement. Law enforcement accreditation is voluntary on the part of the agency. There are currently fifty-nine universities and colleges (including Georgetown) involved in the CALEA accreditation process in the United States.

CALEA accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. Law enforcement accreditation is particularly beneficial to the Department of Public Safety, and to the university community, as it signifies the adherence to an established degree of police standards developed by law enforcement practitioners. Particular emphasis is placed on professionalism, competence, and excellence in the delivery of police services.
