RSS Feeds
Georgetown University provides a variety of content online in an RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) format. Using RSS software, such as newsreaders, news aggregators, tickers or other RSS software, users can subscribe and receive automatic updates of current University content. The Department of Public Safety offers the following RSS feeds:
- Public Safety Alerts
- Campus Alerts (coming soon)
What is RSS?
RSS (or Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format used to syndicate content and allows for the delivery of content (using XML) to a user's desktop via a newsreader, news aggregator, ticker or other RSS software. Most feeds are free from websites, including the Georgetown Web, and contain story headlines, summaries and links back to the full-text of stories and other content. What tools do I need to use RSS?
To start using RSS, you need a special news reader or aggregator that displays RSS content feeds from websites you select. There are many different news readers available, many of which are free of charge. Most are available as software that you download and install on your computer or mobile device. Several Web-based news readers are available as well.
- RSS News Readers (Google)
- RSS News Readers (Yahoo)
Once you have set up your news reader, simply follow the instructions for your particular news reader to subscribe to the RSS content feeds you want. Georgetown University does not warranty or recommend any specific software. Users should review and select software that best fits their system and preferences.
What are the benefits of using RSS?
RSS is an easy way for you to be alerted when content that interests you appears on your favorite websites. Instead of visiting a particular website to browse for new articles and features, RSS automatically tells you when something new is posted online.
